The science is stark.
Simultaneous droughts across major maize-producing regions could strike record-shattering portions of the global agricultural area. The probability of at least one such event between now and 2099 is 52% under intermediate emissions and 60% under high emissions—seven to eleven times higher than we would expect without long-term drying trends.
The grey swan and the boiling frog
The most counterintuitive finding? These crises will emerge slowly and could go unnoticed.
A black swan is dramatic, visible and impossible to miss. A grey swan is foreseeable, but we look away. And the boiling frog never jumps because the heat rises so gradually that it feels normal.
This research shows both at once: we can see this crisis coming, yet it will arrive through an accumulation of moderately extreme droughts across several regions simultaneously—no single alarm loud enough to trigger action until the system fails.
Brazil, Europe and the USA are the highest-risk breadbaskets.

A biological toolbox for resilience
For growers and agronomists, this makes a biological toolbox frontline infrastructure:
